How to find the previous owners of a car
You can find out how many previous keepers a car has had — but, thanks to data-protection law, not usually their names and addresses.
What you can find
- Number of previous keepers — shown on the V5C logbook and in a vehicle history check.
- Keeper change dates — how long each person kept the car, from a history check.
What you generally can't get
The DVLA will only release a named keeper's personal details to someone with "reasonable cause" (for example, an insurer chasing an accident, or a private parking firm). A private buyer curious about who owned a car before will not normally qualify.
Why keeper count matters
A car with many keepers in a short time can indicate recurring problems that owners moved on quickly. A long single ownership often points to a cared-for vehicle. Combine the keeper history with the MOT mileage record for the fullest picture.
If you are the registered keeper and have lost the details, apply to the DVLA for your own vehicle's information rather than a third-party service.
